Arizona Drivers License Renewal

Drivers with expired drivers licenses in Arizona are required to complete the AZ drivers license renewal process if they would like to maintain driving privileges. Although adult motorists are not required to renew drivers licenses in AZ on a regular basis, the state Department of Transportation (DOT) will still re-administer the vision screening and update drivers' photos on a 12-year basis. Certain groups of drivers, such as military members serving outside of the state, are eligible for a five-year license to drive. Renewing Drivers Licenses in Arizona in Person

The Arizona driving license renewal procedure can generally be completed through a local office of the DOT Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). Instead of renewing expired licenses, drivers also have the option of submitting their renewal request up to six months prior to the credential's expiration date. Note that your application to renew drivers licenses in AZ may also be accepted by certain authorized third-party providers. The option to renew driving licenses via the internet is not currently available.

When renewing driving licenses in AZ you will be required to complete several steps. Note that motorists who are only completing the standard 12-year license update will not be required to complete all steps in the renewal procedure. During the DMV license renewal process, you will generally have to:

  • Submit your current AZ license to drive.
  • Present the necessary proofs of identification.
  • Complete and submit the DOT Driver License Application (Form 40-5122).
  • Have a new photo taken by a DMV official.
  • Undergo the mandatory vision screening.
  • Pay the applicable driving license renewal fees in AZ.

During the procedure to renew expired drivers licenses in AZ, applicants will also be required to submit evidentiary documents other than their current license to drive. Your driving credential will serve as your primary identification documentation. As a secondary identity proof, you can submit documents such as a military identification card, an AZ birth certificate, an employee ID card or a marriage certificate.

After accepting your AZ drivers license renewal application, the department will issue you a temporary credential of a 30-day validity. Drivers generally receive their renewed license by mail within two to three weeks of submitting their applications.

Note: Prior to renewing drivers licenses in AZ, ensure that your current address is on file with the department and that you have no outstanding violations on your driving record.

Renewing Drivers Licenses in Arizona as a Member of the Military

The option to renew drivers licenses in Arizona by mail is only available to specific groups of drivers. Military members stationed outside of AZ, for instance, can apply for a DMV license renewal by mailing their application to the Motor Vehicle Division office in Phoenix. Active duty personnel can complete the process of renewing driving licenses in AZ with the DOT driver license application form, mentioned above. Prior to mailing out the 41-5122 form, however, applicants must have it notarized. Members of the military must also include a photocopy of their current driving credential, as well as their military identification cards. The payment for the driver license renewal fee can be provided in the form of a check or a money order.

The Arizona driving license renewal request can be mailed to the following address:

  • Motor Vehicle Division
  • P.O. Box 2100
  • MD 510
  • Phoenix, AZ 85001

While military members are required to renew driving licenses on a regular basis, they may be able to avoid completing the standard driving license update procedure. To avoid updating your photo and retaking the vision test on a 12-year basis, you must submit proof of your active military status to the AZ DOT in the form of your official leave documents or your military earnings report.

Note: The mail-in option of renewing drivers licenses in AZ is also available to spouses and dependents of members of the military. Applicants can submit their request in person upon their return within the state as well.
